Petra Stalder

Petra Stalder, born in 1983, is a Swiss artist who lives and works in Bern, Switzerland. In her current practice, she creates sculptures from jute, wire, paper and pigmented paste. The works take the form of cocoons and address processes of change, transformation and Wabi-Sabi (侘寂).
Inside the cocoons, a complete metamorphosis symbolically takes place. Stalder sees these forms as a counterpoint to perfectionist ideals of beauty. Her works rebel against standardized notions of perfection and instead celebrate humanity, authenticity, natural aging and tolerance.
The cocoon works have been installed on the doors of art institutions, among other places. Her sculptures can be found in national and international private collections.
